TAN Registration Number
TAN (Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number) is a unique 10-digit alphanumeric code allotted by the Income Tax Department. It is mandatory for all persons and entities responsible for deducting or collecting taxes at source.
TAN Number Format & Structure
- First 4 Characters (Alphabets): First three letters represent jurisdiction, and the fourth represents applicant’s name.
- Next 5 Characters (Numbers): Unique system-generated digits.
- Last Character (Alphabet): A unique letter generated by the system.
- Example: ABCD12345E
Who Needs a TAN?
- Businesses & Companies – Making TDS deductions on salaries, rent, contractor payments, commission, or professional fees.
- Non-Profit Organizations – Required if making payments beyond specified thresholds.
- Branches of Companies – Each branch making specified payments must apply for TAN separately.
- Proprietorship Firms – Individual proprietors must apply for TAN if liable to deduct TDS.
Note: Salaried individuals not required to deduct TDS do not need a TAN.
Importance of TAN Registration
As per Section 203A of the Income Tax Act, 1961, every person or entity deducting or collecting tax at source must obtain TAN. It is compulsory to quote TAN in the following documents:
- ✔ TDS/TCS returns and statements
- ✔ TDS/TCS challans
- ✔ TDS/TCS certificates issued to deductees
- ✔ Other income-tax related forms
Without a valid TAN, the Income Tax Department may levy penalties, and banks may refuse to accept TDS payments.
Features of TAN Registration
- ✔ Lifetime Validity – Once issued, TAN remains valid for life.
- ✔ Mandatory for TDS/TCS – Banks will not accept TDS challans without TAN.
- ✔ Applies to Proprietors – Even small businesses must apply if liable for TDS.
- ✔ Unique Identifier – A distinct code for tracking all tax deductions and collections.
Advantages of Obtaining a TAN Number
- ✔ Ensures Legal Compliance – Avoid penalties and legal repercussions.
- ✔ Smooth Tax Operations – Simplifies TDS deductions and submissions.
- ✔ Easy Monitoring – Helps reconcile TDS/TCS transactions efficiently.
- ✔ Credibility for Businesses – Enhances business compliance status.
