Why FSSAI License Renewal is Important
For every food business in India, renewing the FSSAI license or registration is not just a regulatory formality — it’s a crucial step to ensure legal compliance and food safety standards. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) governs this process, ensuring that all Food Business Operators (FBOs) continue to meet quality benchmarks and hygiene standards.
Validity of FSSAI Licenses & Why Renewal Matters
Since FSSAI licenses are valid for 1 to 5 years, timely renewal helps avoid business interruptions and penalties, ensuring your operations run smoothly and legally.

FSSAI License and Registration for Food Businesses in India
Whether you’re involved in manufacturing, processing, packaging, storage, distribution, or transportation of food, obtaining and renewing your FSSAI registration or license is mandatory. The type of license you need depends on the scale and nature of your business operations.
Each registered food business is assigned a unique 14-digit FSSAI number, which must be displayed on all food packages. This number signifies compliance with national food safety laws and enhances the credibility and transparency of your business.
FSSAI Registration
FSSAI Registration is required for small-scale food businesses with an annual turnover of up to ₹12 lakhs. This registration ensures that even small manufacturers, retailers, and distributors comply with basic food hygiene and safety norms.
This category covers:
- Small food manufacturers
- Local food vendors
- Petty retailers and distributors
- Temporary food stalls
FSSAI License
If your business turnover exceeds ₹12 lakhs, you must apply for an FSSAI License. Based on the operational scale, there are two main categories:
- State FSSAI License – For medium-sized food businesses operating within a single state, typically with a turnover between ₹12 lakhs and ₹20 crores.
- Central FSSAI License – For large food enterprises, including importers, exporters, or multi-state operators with turnover exceeding ₹20 crores.
Each license type ensures that your business aligns with FSSAI’s national quality and safety standards.
Validity and Renewal of FSSAI License
FSSAI licenses are issued for a specific validity period and must be renewed periodically to remain active. According to the FSSAI order dated 11th January 2023 (effective from 12th January 2023), the validity terms are standardized as follow
| Type of License / Registration | Duration of Validity |
|---|---|
| FSSAI Registration | 1 to 5 Years (as per applicant’s choice) |
| FSSAI State License | 1 Year |
| FSSAI Central License | 1 Year |
To avoid any disruption in your business operations, it is essential to initiate the renewal process before your license expires.
Why Timely Renewal of FSSAI License is Important?
Renewing your FSSAI license ensures that your business continues to operate legally while maintaining compliance with national food safety norms. Delay or failure to renew may lead to penalties, suspension, or cancellation of your license.
Starting the renewal process at least 30 days before the expiry date ensures uninterrupted operations and avoids penalties. Delfyle recommends initiating the renewal process as early as 180 days (6 months) before expiry to allow sufficient time for verification and processing.
Late Fee and Penalties for Delayed Renewal
If a Food Business Operator (FBO) fails to apply for renewal at least 30 days before the license expires, a late fee of ₹100 per day is levied in addition to the standard renewal fee.
This late fee applies only to FSSAI licenses and not to FSSAI registrations. Timely renewal prevents additional costs and ensures continuous validity of your FSSAI certification.
Renewal of Expired FSSAI License
If your FSSAI license has already expired, you can still renew it within 180 days from the date of expiry, but additional penalties will apply:
- Up to 90 days late – Three times the standard annual fee
- 91 to 180 days late – Five times the standard annual fee
After 180 days, the license is deemed invalid, and a new FSSAI license must be applied for. Delfyle can assist you in both renewal and reapplication processes to help you stay compliant.
Penalty for Non-Compliance
Failure to file Form 15CA/15CB, or incorrect filing, attracts a penalty of ₹10,000 per instance under the Income Tax Act.
